WHERE HEARTS MEET SCIENCE

25 years of
research funded.
Countless lives
changed.

*

A local cause
with worldwide
effects.

The mission of the PANDA is to support discovery processes that lead to improved treatments and cures for devastating childhood diseases. The Board accomplishes its mission by raising awareness and private funding for the Steele Children’s Research Center at the University of Arizona.

PANDA’s fundraising aims to support medical research to produce ideas, engineer treatments, and to find cures for sick children. Too often we meet families who have traveled great lengths and spent thousands of dollars on a diagnosis for their child with no solution. Then, within one visit at the Steele Children’s Research Center, they’re on their way to finding the answers they so desperately need.

Finding answers is what PANDA is all about. For more than two decades, PANDA has funded pilot projects and early-stage research that has resulted in millions of dollars in grant seed money for world-class physician-scientists to bring new treatments and cures to the world.

SUPPORTING MEDICAL RESEARCH

CANCER

PANDA supports research into the link between the health of the gastrointestinal tract which impacts the immune system and the inflammatory state of cancer and developmental growth. PANDA-funded researchers are exploring treatments for cancer-causing genetic mutations.

CARDIOLOGY

x

CARDIOLOGY

PANDA’s funding of cardiac research began in 2002 and continues today with a focus on advanced technology in congenital heart disease (CHD) which impacts nearly one in 100 babies. Timely intervention is crucial as untreated CHD can lead to heart failure, developmental delays, and even premature death.

MICROBIOME

x

MICROBIOME

You won’t hear the phrase “gut microbiome” in everyday conversation, unless you’re a PANDA. Our researchers investigate the role a balanced microbiome plays in children’s well being. PANDA-funded projects in this area have resulted in a wealth of scientific discovery and elevated the Steele Children’s Research Center to prominence in pediatric healthcare.

HUMAN GENOME

GENETICS/GENOMICS

x

PANDA’s support of personalized medicine includes the purchase of several genome sequencing machines to study thousands of individual genes simultaneously. This kind of cutting-edge medical research is critical to the children and families we serve.

ENDOWMENTS

Our NIH grant support exceeds $100 million

For two decades, PANDA has supported the initial work of researchers to submit for grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). To date, our researchers have received more than $100 million in NIH grants. These grants provide essential financial support to expand upon PANDA’s initial scientific investigations, enabling the exploration of innovative ideas and advancements in various fields. The NIH’s rigorous peer-review process ensures that only the most promising and impactful studies receive funding, promoting scientific excellence, enhancing researchers’ credibility, opening doors for collaboration, and driving breakthroughs that benefit society as a whole.

Half-Match Bone Marrow
Transplants a Reality

PANDA-funded researchers are improving outcomes for cancer patients who need a bone marrow transplant but cannot find a donor match. These breakthroughs allow a patient’s parents or siblings to possibly be donors.

Half-Match Bone Marrow Transplant

PANDA-funded researcher Emmanuel Katsanis, MD, and his team of pediatric cancer researchers are improving outcomes of haploidentical (half-match) bone marrow transplantation, an alternative for cancer patients who need a bone marrow transplant but cannot find a donor match. This means a donor doesn’t have to be a perfect match—he or she can be a “half-match.” These breakthroughs allow a pediatric patient’s parents or siblings to possibly be suitable donors, providing answers and hope to countless families. “This is particularly important in Arizona where we have a large population of Hispanics, who only have about a 45% chance of finding an unrelated bone marrow match.”

Building a Clinic to
Relieve Children’s Allergies

The PANDA Children’s Aerodigestive Disorders Center is both a clinical and research facility that serves children who are suffering from disorders of the digestive tract caused by allergies. It’s the only of its kind in Arizona.

PANDA Aerodigestive Center

The PANDA Children’s Aerodigestive Disorders Center is both a clinical and research facility. It is the only one of its kind in the entire state of Arizona – built in Tucson with PANDA funding in 2007. The center serves children who are suffering from eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders – disorders of the digestive tract caused by allergies to food and airborne allergens. Children with eosinophilic esophagitis and/or eosinophilic gastroenteritis often fail to grow, suffer from nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, choking, cramping, and diarrhea. Arizona has far more cases of EE/ EG than the national average, yet there was no place in the western U.S. where children can receive dedicated care for this painful disease. In response, the PANDA Center now serves Arizona and the Southwest, employing a team approach to treat children with aerodigestive disorders.
